Stephen Colbert made a rare appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers to chat about life and everything that is going on with late night TV. Of course, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert coming to an end came up, with us learning when the last ever episode would air.
This opened up a discussion about what Colbert will miss the most. It was a touching couple of minutes, as he made it clear it’s not really about the show.
The ending of The Late Show feels real
I think for a lot of us, hearing about the show being canceled and then finding out the last episode date are two very different things, and that was the case for Colbert. We all knew The Late Show was coming to an end, but it didn’t feel real until CBS confirmed the final episode date. Like us, Colbert noted that that moment made the whole thing feel real.
Of course, it was sad in July when we learned the news, and it was certainly sad for Colbert. However, there was something still hopeful about it — that things would change enough for CBS to realize the mistake they were making.
It’s not just Colbert who will leave CBS. The entire Late Show is going away, and that’s a huge thing!
What Stephen Colbert will miss the most after The Late Show
Colbert shared that it’s not the show as a whole that he will miss. Nor is it performing at the Ed Sullivan Theater, although he does say that is the best place to perform comedy.
It’s the people he will miss the most, and when you talk to anyone who is on a canceled show, they tend to say the same thing. Hundreds of people work on a series to make it work. Late night TV isn’t as packed with crew as scripted shows are, but there’s still a lot of people behind the scenes making sure the shows go off without a hitch.
These shows become family, and that is something Colbert will miss.
“But it’s really the people… I’m going to miss more than anything. But it feels real now. I’m not thrilled with it.”

There’s also a sense that he will miss the people who come to the show. One of the great things about the late night shows is that they still tape in front of a live audience. It’s possible to get tickets for them, and this creates its own atmosphere.
Speaking of tickets, the February tickets for The Late Show are completely sold out, so if you want tickets before the series finale in May, may sure you get some now!
The Late Show airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.
