The Late Show with Stephen Colbert can deal with some pretty heavy subjects. But it's still a comedy show at the end of the day, and host Stephen Colbert likes to keep his guests at east. However, the late-night host admitted to getting carried away alongside a high-profile actor.

Fans have seen Colbert reach for a bottle of glass of liquor from time to time behind the Late Show desk. It's usually for a bit, but other times it's to promote a product or just help a guest relax if it makes sense.

"That is a rule of the show," Colbert said on Busy This Week. "If I have to drink alcohol for a bit, in rehearsals it's always tea, but in the show, it always has to be real alcohol. I'm not going to lie to the American people."

So has Stephen Colbert ever got drunk on his own show? He did admit the drunkest he's ever been was while interviewing Dakota Johnson.

"[Johnson] came on for some movie that she was clearly not in a great mood to talk about," Colbert shared. To help Lawrence relax, Colbert offered her some Cuban rum when she got on stage.

"We did so many shots that the network said 'you have to take some of those shots out,'" he added. And Colbert wasn't exaggerating based on the fact he spent most of the story telling Busy Philliips it was Jennifer Lawrence, not Dakota Johnson.

The incident in question clearly messed with Stephen Colbert's memory. Not only did he initally get the guest wrong, he's also mistaken about the alcohol that night.

It wasn't Cuban rum but rather tequila. Not only that, but Johnson requested the booze when she met Colbert at the Met Gala the night before their interview.

Johnson visited The Late Show that night in 2016 to promote her role in Luca Guadagnino's film A Bigger Splash. The movie received largely positive reviews, so it's unclear why Johnson wouldn't want to discuss it. Colbert did note it was at the end of a long promotion tour. That, combined with the Met Gala the night before, and it becomes a little more understandable why Johnson would want a drink.
