Seth Meyers is the latest late-night television host to give his take on President Donald Trump’s viral AI-generated meme depicting himself holding an assault rifle. The Late NIght host used his “A Closer Look” segment Thursday night to question both the optics and the timing.
President Trump shared an image to Truth Social depicting himself carrying an assault rifle, wearing black sunglasses with explosions in the background. The caption read "no more Mr. Nice Guy" in an apparent attempt to negotiate with Iran.
Clearly, the 79-year-old president thought he looked pretty cool and pretty tough in the image. But Meyers wasted little time in disabusing President Trump of that notion. The comedian quite correctly said President Trump looked less like John Wick and more like a character from a movie about seniors breaking out of their retirement home to pull one last bank robbery.
Meyers also zeroed in on the fact that Trump shared the image in the early hours of the morning, highlighting what he saw as the most bizarre detail of all. “The craziest part is he posted it at 4:05 a.m.,” Meyers said, incredulous at the idea of a president posting a stylized, weapon-themed image before dawn.
If the image was meant to instill fear in Iran, Meyers isn't all that convinced it worked. Even worse, the Late Night host wondered how much confidence the American people should have in a commander-in-chief that is posting memes just after 4:00 in the morning.
Meyers did little to comfort his audience as he pivoted to President Trump's top military advisor, Pete Hegseth. "A Closer Look" moved on to highlights (or lowlights) of the Secretary of Defense testifying in front of the House Armed Services Committee.
The comedian sarcastically endorsed Secretary Hegseth as laser-focused on the adversaries in Iran. However, the clip package that followed showcased just how many times Hegseth mentioned former President Joe Biden and tried to lay blame on the previous administration.
Meyers couldn't help but add in another dig at the current president when bringing up his predecessor. The late-night host argued that President Biden could pull off a pair of aviator shades much better than the "off-brand Terminator" look of President Trump's meme.
Taken together, President Trump and Secretary Hegseth aren't exactly the tough guys they want to portray themselves as. Late Night with Seth Meyers didn't have to look to hard to uncover that one. "A Closer Look" exposed both the Iran war strategy and Trump's assault rifle picture as epic failures.
