Saturday Night Live's 50th season inspired another round of speculation regarding Lorne Michaels future. Plenty of names have been thrown around as possible replacements, including one who was confronted with the question face-to-face.

Michaels hasn't said anything to suggest he's ready to walk away from Saturday Night Live. But at 80 years old, it's reasonable to think Michaels may want to consider retirement. Those without detailed knowledge of SNL behind the scenes often point to former cast members as possible replacements.

Tina Fey's name often comes up in the conversation. She served as Saturday Night Live's head writer, collaborated with Michaels on projects outside of Studio 8H, and is considered to have some of the best taste in comedy.

So would Fey take the job? Parade put Fey on the spot during an interview alongside her The Four Seasons co-star and fellow SNL alum, Will Forte.

"Oh ... I think Will should do it," she said. Forte was more than happy to step up, jokingly saying he'd do it. "Will's gonna do it!" an amused Fey responded. "SNL!"

How to decipher Tina Fey's response about taking Lorne Michaels' job

There are a few ways to read Fey's response. One, she may have wanted to keep the focus on The Four Seasons and knew that any sincere answer would create different headlines.

Or, she's tired of the question and speculation. Back in 2023, NBC had to debunk a rumor that Fey was confirmed to be Michaels' successor.

Then there is the slim chance that something is in the works between Fey and her former Saturday Night Live boss. It won't be after this season, but perhaps some conversations have gone on inside 30 Rock about an SNL homecoming for Fey.

Only time will tell. Until then, Saturday Night Live season 50 has three episodes left. Tina Fey and Will Forte star in The Four Seasons on Netflix beginning May 1.
