Saturday Night Live is an institution, and as such, getting the chance to host the show is an honor of the highest caliber. It means you've achieved a level of fame that is massive enough to power an hour of primetime television. Some guests excel, and are asked to come back. Others, well, aren't.

There's no shortage of infamous SNL guests, from Steven Seagal to Martin Lawrence, but most of the controversial instances of the show have been in the 20th century. It's hard to come across too many instances of the sketch show getting out of hand in the modern day.

Adrien Brody was reportedly banned in 2003

As such, we thought it'd be interesting to look back and investigate the most recent instance of a host getting banned from the show. Strictly musical guests are excluded, which means Kanye West does not make the cut. We're looking only at celebrities who hosted, and appeared in sketches.

The last person to receive this dubious honor was Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner, who remains the youngest man to win Best Actor, hosted the show in 2003. He was fresh off his turn in The Pianist, and poised to be a massive star. Unfortunately, Adrien Brody made a baffling choice that soured his time on the show.

While he got along fine with the cast, Adrien Brody decided to go completely off book when it came time to introduce musical guest Sean Paul. When it came time to introduce the reggae artist, Brody decided to wear fake dreadlocks and speak in a cartoonish Jamaican patois.

The actor claims he was not told about the ban

Needless to say, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was not pleased. He decided to ban Brody on the spot, and the decision has been upheld for over two decades. According to the actor, though, he was not informed of any ban.

During a 2012 interview with the Huffington Post, Brody was asked about his SNL stint, and he kept his answers curt and short. "I've heard that, but I don't know," he said in response to the rumors. He also said that he would be up to hosting the show again at some point. Something tells us this won't be happening anytime soon.
