Saturday Night Live has always relied on political satire. The show has derived some of its most iconic moments from poking fun at politicians. This has been especially true in the last decade, when things have reached a point of self-parody.

Tim Walz has been announced as the Vice President running mate for Kamala Harris, and SNL fans were immediately compelled to sift through the Rolodex of SNL veterans and determine which of them could best portray Walz.

Steve Martin is the favorite to portray Walz on SNL

The idea of bringing back an established Saturday Night Live name has worked wonders in the past. Tina Fey came back to SNL to portray Sarah Palin to critical acclaim, and Maya Rudolph managed to win a Primetime Emmy for her portrayal of Kamala Harris.

If SNL were to dig into their past, and pull out a beloved name to portray Walz, then the overwhelming online choice has been Steve Martin. Martin not only bears enough of a resemblance to Walz to make it work, but he has the same bubbly energy as the Vice Presidential nominee.

Steve Martin was never technically a cast member on Saturday Night Live, but he mine as well have been. He's one of the most adored hosts in the show's history, having done the honors an impressive 16 times, which is second all time to Alec Baldwin.

Martin hosted SNL as recently as 2022

Baldwin, of course, would go on to play Donald Trump for several years on SNL, so Martin is in good company when it comes to popular hosts-turned-political impressionists. Martin has continued to be an SNL regular into his old age, as well. Where some hosts rack up a bunch of appearances early on, Martin has hosted as recently as 2022.

Some fans have campaigned for other performers to portray Walz, like Tracy Letts or Jim Gaffigan, but when it comes to SNL pedigree, and iconography, Steve Martin will be tough to beat. We can't wait to find out which direction the show goes in.
