Steve Martin reveals why he turned down SNL offer to play Tim Walz
The internet had one demand when Tim Walz was announced as Kamala Harris' running mate: get Steve Martin back on Saturday Night Live. Fans everywhere felt that the beloved comedian had the right look and vibe to portray Walz in the upcoming 50th season.
Unfortunately, Steve Martin has turned down the offer. Yes, there actually was an offer made by SNL boss Lorne Michaels. The comedian was reportedly contacted by Michaels on Wednesday morning, but after a lengthy conversation, it was determined that he wasn't the right guy for the job.
Steve Martin claimed he lacked the skillset
"I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no," Martin explained to the Los Angeles Times. The comedian then shared the exact reasons why he felt he was the wrong choice to play Walz on a weekly basis:
"I said, 'Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.' I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses."
Another reason Steve Martin was hesitant to accept the offer was the level of commitment that would be needed. Maya Rudolph, for example, signed on to play Kamala Harris through the bulk of season 50, and Martin, who is 79, did not want to tie himself down.
The comedian didn't want to make a long term commitment
"It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again," he explained to the outlet. "Again, they need a real impressionist to do that... It's ongoing. "They’re gonna find somebody really, really good." Martin claimed that he would be "struggling" if he attempted to do his best Walz.
While we think Martin would have been better than he's giving himself credit for, we applaud his ability to step back and determine that someone else would be better suited for the gig. We are excited to see who SNL eventually casts.
