Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell want to remake a comedy classic
Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell are comedy giants. They've made audiences laugh for over 25 years, and they both got their start as correspondents on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. They even appeared on The Office together (Colbert as a recurring cameo, Carell as lead, of course).
It should then come as no surprise that Carell was the guest Colbert brought on The Lat Show to celebrate his 60th birthday. The two men talked about aging, and Colbert praised Carell for taking his one day off from doing a Broadway show to drop by. Colbert apologizes to Carell because he had the actor on shortly before he turned 60, and he turned the whole thing into a joke.
Carell wants Stephen Colbert to do a Broadway show
Colbert even hard cuts to a clip in which he mocks Carell for being two years older than him. "Did you need supplemental oxygen to come out here," he asks the Oscar-nominated actor. Carell took it in all in stride (naturally), and proposed that the two sixty-somethings collaborate on a new project. "When are you going to do Broadway," he asks the host. "And when are we going to do a Broadway show?"
Carell threw out the possibility of him and Colbert starring in a remake of the comedy classic The Odd Couple, and the crowd ate the idea up. The actor has a hilarious twist on the concept, however. Instead of having one actor play the slob roommate and the other play the neat freak, they will both play the neat freak. "We both play Felix," he quipped.
Colbert joked about bringing Jon Stewart on stage with them
Colbert added to the bit by suggesting Jon Stewart play the slob, Oscar. "We switch off playing Felix," he said while laughing. The bit got even more absurd from there, with Carell suggesting they switch off every other scene. "Somebody is saying right now," he added. "'That might work. I'd pay for that.'"
The topic became more serious after that, with both men reflecting on their early days in improv, but the point stands: fans would happily watch an iteration of The Odd Couple with these old friends. The Jon Stewart angle and switching every other scene, might be tricky, though.
