Spirit Halloween ruthlessly mocks "irrelevant" SNL after recent sketch

Not the feud we thought we'd be getting this season.

Saturday Night Live likes to poke fun at different institutions. It's never particularly scathing. It's SNL, after all. The show decided to go the topical route and lampoon Spirit Halloween, the costume store chain that surfaces every October and then disappears for the rest of the year.

The sketch, which aired during the season 50 premiere, was fine. It was towards the middle of the pack in terms of quality, but Spirit Halloween saw an opportunity to cash in on their Saturday Night Live exposure. They fired back with a social media post that was far more brutal.

Spirit Halloween claimed SNL had 'shrinking ratings'

The Spirit Halloween Twitter account used their iconic costume packaging to roast SNL for their waning relevance. The account included a description that read: “Irrelevant 50-year-old TV show." The costume also came complete with "dated references, unknown cast members, and shrinking ratings." Ouch.

The caption that accompanied the pic was even more cutting! Spirit Halloween flipped the fact that they specialize in Halloween content, aka ghostly designs and costumes, to suggest that SNL needs to be resurrected in terms of popularity:

"We are great at raising things back from the dead."

SNL's season 50 premiere was surprisingly controversial

Spirit Halloween is not the first to comment on Saturday Night Live's waning relevance in recent years. The show has struggled to find new stars to anchor their sketches around, and the format, while iconic, has been viewed as increasingly outdated in the TikTok age.

That said, the show can still make headlines. SNL garnered lots of attention for lampooning Donald Trump and Kamala Harris during its cold open segment. Then there was the Weekend Update bit in which Bowen Yang mocked Chappell Roan. The latter generated so much backlash, in fact, that the comedian felt the need to issue a statement via Instagram.

The ball is on SNL's court in terms of how to respond to Spirit Halloween. Does the show let it go or decided to double down on their Spirit Halloween satirizing with another sketch? We can't wait to find out.
