Seth Meyers to return with second A Closer Look special in September
Seth Meyers may have his hands as the host of Late Night, but the comedian is not slowing down. He's decided to add a network special titled A Closer Look Primetime to his schedule during the end of the year. The special will be Meyers' second, following A Closer Look in 2020.
Deadline reports that the CBS special will air at 10 p.m. on September 11, 2024. It will see Meyers expand upon the segment of the same name, which he introduced on Late Night, and discuss a wide range of global topics. The most notable of which will be the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
Meyers' CBS special will cover the presidential debate
The presidential debate will have aired the night before, September 10, meaning Meyers will have plenty of material to sift through and mock. As one can ascertain from the 2020 release date of the last A Closer Look special, the emphasis of that one was also on the election.
Seth Meyers has not spoken on CBS' decision to bring the Closer Look format back, but his 2021 chat with Deadline suggests that he was surprised.
Meyers didn't expect to host another Closer Look
The comedian joked that the original special did not do particularly well in the ratings department:
"I feel like the old 'SNL' butterflies came back in a good way... I will say when it was over, the network didn’t call and ask us to do another one."
Seth Meyers also has a standup special in the works this fall. Variety confirmed that the host will be taping an hour long set the Vic Theater in Chicago, and that the resulting special will premiere on Max. It will mark Meyers' first special since Lobby Baby in 2019, and it will be directed by fellow stand up master, Neal Brennan.
In short, it's a good time to be a Meyers fan.
