Ryan Gosling actually isn't a part of the SNL Five-Timers Club! (How many times has he hosted Saturday Night Live?)
Ryan Gosling is one of my favorite actors, and it's so exciting that we're getting him back on this week's episode of Saturday Night Live, which airs tonight, April 13, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. You don't want to miss it! The star is coming on to promote his new movie The Fall Guy, released Friday, May 3, in theaters.
In last week's episode, SNL alum Kristin Wiig took on hosting duties, with it being her fifth time to do so. And that means she's officially a part of the Five-Timers Club! During her opening monologue, she had some fun celebrity cameos, including Gosling himself. And her famous friends were all wearing a Five-Timers Club robe, ready to induct her. But actually, the Barbie actor himself has not hosted Saturday Night Live five times.
Gosling has only hosted SNL two times, and tonight's episode will be his third time doing so. But, it was all in fun as part of the joke in Wiig's opening monologue. In fact, none of the other celeb guests like Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, and Martin Short have hosted five times either. Still, perhaps some of you may have gotten confused. Gosling is very close to five though! Do you think he should reach that number? I certainly do!
A look back at Ryan Gosling as host on SNL
The very first time the actor hosted Saturday Night Live was season 41 episode 7 which aired Dec. 5, 2015 with Leon Bridges as the musical guest. During his opening monologue, fellow Canadian Mike Myers appeared to help out. They joked about how Gosling is from Canada but doesn't want to admit that because "not everyone is a fan of immigrants right now," talking about Donald Trump who had been campaigning at that time. They also touched on Canadian stereotypes with a song. Fun fact: his Barbie co-star Kate McKinnon was a part of the main SNL cast on this season, so they had worked together on the variety show first!
The second time Gosling was tapped to host was less than two years later for the season 43 premiere, which aired Sept. 30, 2017. The actor came on to promote his movie Blade Runner 2049 at the time, with Jay-Z as the musical guest. The opening monologue was a hilarious dig at those who criticized his movie La La Land, claiming that a white character (Gosling) "saved" jazz from being forgotten. Some critics saw the story this was because jazz originated in the Black communities. The talent even brought on his La La co-star Emma Stone, as she declared "we saved jazz." He also reunited with McKinnon once again.
When Gosling has come on, it's so funny to see when he cracks and can't hold it together through the whole sketch. I can't blame him though! In 2015, his sketches included a family being interviewed by the U.S. government for being the the only ones to have encountered aliens (alongside McKinnon!); taking part in a Weekend Update; and at a bar with a GQ writer in Cornwall, Ontario where he grew up and came across a former bully. He ended the show with a sweet gesture, giving a shoutout to his partner Eva Mendes and their daughter Esmeralada. So cute!
Then when he returned in 2017, the sketches included a hilarious follow-up to the alien abduction story; Levi's Wokes; The Fliplets on HGTV; a Weekend Update, a Dominos commercial, and my personal favorite sketch of the night - his horror and obsession that the Avatar movie logo art looks similar to the Papyrus font.
For me personally, I liked the sketches the first time Gosling came on Saturday Night Live more, though his second time around also had good moments. My favorite is definitely the alien encounters, and the star definitely couldn't hold it together either. Once again, Golsin ended the episode with a shoutout to Mendes, and their daughters - Esmeralda and Amada.
The Fall Guy
Don't miss Gosling's third time hosting tonight, with Chris Stapleton taking the stage! I wonder if the actor is planning to bring out his Barbie co-stars during the opening monologue as celeb cameos. I would love to see Margot Robbie or America Ferrera. Plus, McKinnon just has to pop up! She was a part of the SNL cast for 10 years after all. Fingers crossed!
It could also be very likely that the actor chooses to have his The Fall Guy co-star Emily Blunt make an appearance. The action comedy is centered around Colt Seavers (Gosling), a "battle-scarred stuntman" who has been out of the business for a year, per the synopsis. But he jumps right back into things when the star of the movie Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) goes missing. To save the film he's working on alongside first-time director and his ex-girlfriend Jody Moreno (Blunt), he takes on the mission of finding Tom. And as he does, Colt finds himself "ensnared in a sinister plot that pushes him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt."
Saturday Night Live airs a new episode tonight, April 13, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
