Rob Lowe makes hilarious plea to become VP on The Tonight Show
The Tonight Show received a lot of criticism during the 2016 election. Many felt that Jimmy Fallon was not incisive enough when it came to political comedy, even though the host made it clear that he doesn't feel comfortable wading into controversial waters.
Fallon has struck a better balance in recent years, and the solution has been to lean into the inherent silliness of politics as a concept. Rob Lowe was one of the guests on The Tonight Show last week, and the actor cracked Fallon up with an unexpected plea to become Kamala Harris' running mate in the current election.
Rob Lowe cited his film career as why he should be VP
Lowe interrupted the talk show host during his nightly monologue to announce that he has what it takes to lead. "Jimmy, I heard you say it was one of the fastest VP searches in history," he explained. "So I thought, you know, if I could alleviate, you know, some of the stress, I would volunteer for the role."
Then, quite unexpectedly, the actor proceeds to detail all the ways in which he's a good choice for running mate. Lowe cues patriotic music, and assures the viewers that he's "not like the others." The cheesy acting is on ten here:
The highlight of the bit had to be when Rob Lowe began mentioning his classic films as examples of him being a worthy VP. "There’s no greater outside than the person who starred in The Outsiders," he asserted. "I can adapt to any situation. I can be comedic, like in Tommy Boy. Dramatic, like in St. Elmo’s Fire. Or stop a nuclear threat, like in Atomic Train."
Lowe also made a hilarious West Wing reference
Lowe then brought it all home with a slogan that's hilarious as it is silly:
"So remember when they go high, we go Lowe."
Jimmy Fallon tried to inform Lowe that the process of picking a VP is a bit more complicated than throwing one's hat in the ring, but the actor once again pointed to his resume. "I know how it works, Jimmy. I was in The West Wing," he quipped.
It's safe to assume Harris will pass on the offer, but we can't question Lowe's passion. Comedic or otherwise.
