The moment Kamala Harris announced she was running for President, the internet turned their attention to Maya Rudolph. The beloved comedian won a Primetime Emmy for playing Harris on Saturday Night Live back in 2019. There's nobody else SNL could have gotten to fill the spot, and thankfully, Rudolph was game to return.

While it had already been confirmed that the comedian would be returning to play Harris in season 50, she didn't publicly address the casting until her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She went on to promote her latest show, Loot, but the conversation invariably shifted to Harris and the election cycle.

Rudolph's SNL return was confirmed before she even knew

Maya Rudolph made it clear that she's eager to come back. "This has been such a tremendous, exciting time for me that feels so much bigger than me or anything I’ve ever done," she explained to guest host RuPaul Charles. "I’ve never experienced something like this before in any of the work I’ve done."

The most interesting aspect of Rudolph's return, however, was the fact that she didn't even know that she was returning to Saturday Night Live before the news was announced. She was flattered, but still a little surprised by how quickly the decisions were made:

"I think I was home watching 'The Bear' and it was announced that I’d confirmed doing 'SNL.' I was like, I did what? Everybody’s just ready for it."

The comedian is honored to play a presidential nominee

Rudolph went on to note how honored she was that she will be getting a chance to play a presidential nominee. She told RuPaul Charles that she never anticipated that a woman of her ethnic background would be a candidate, especially after years of being on SNL and seeing men portray politicians.

"To think that we’re here now, and to think that I would ever be close by association, is so incredible," she concluded. "To think that I had anything to do with this by association is mind-blowing." We're all relieved that Rudolph is coming back. Now we just want to know who will play VP nominee Tim Walz.
