All 4 late-night shows ranked from worst to best
When it comes to late night talk shows, there are four men currently running the show(s). And while each of these shows tends to follow very similar formats, it is the hosts that really bring the flavor. Whether you like Jimmy Fallon and his ability to basically be friends with everyone or Stephen Colbert's knack for news commentary that is both humorous and hard-hitting, there is a lot to be said for the four late night shows on TV right now.
While there are only four major late night shows at this point, that is enough for us to decide that we need to talk about which show, and in turn host, is the best and who is at the bottom of our watch list. Although we have tuned in for all four late night shows, the hosts really do make all the difference.
4. Jimmy Kimmel Live
Honestly, as much as I tend not to judge Jimmy Kimmel as a person, I am not a fan of his late night show and hosting. Obviously, any ranking is going to be biased based on our own thoughts about a show or person, but when it comes to Jimmy Kimmel Live, I simply don't enjoy it. Sure, there are segments that work and are entertaining, but overall this is not a late night show I am going to watch unless there is literally nothing else on. And it probably doesn't help that there have been plenty of times where it has felt like he has taken the low road for laughs, without really seeming to understand the story and facts behind a situation.
While I may not be tuning into late night for news, they are part of the discussions around current events, so it is so important that a host doesn't comment or joke about something unless they truly know what they are talking about.
3. Late Night with Seth Meyers
When it comes to Late Night with Seth Meyers, it is hard to see him in the third spot because he does know how to bring humor to his show. The problem is that there is something about his dry humor that doesn't always land. Sometimes it just feels like he is trying too hard to bring his SNL roots to the table, while also channeling Jon Stewart of years gone by.
Seth Meyers can be brilliant, but there are just enough episodes where things fall flat that it is hard to give him a better ranking here. It also doesn't help that he is in competition with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon who are simply magical in their roles.
2. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
It was hard to not have Stephen Colbert in the top spot, but there was simply no way that Jimmy Fallon didn't get the top spot as host of The Tonight Show. The thing about Colbert is that he is a genuinely smart and fascinating man. He can deliver humor just as easily as he does the news. Over the last few years, he has proven that he can be hard-hitting and also handle tragedy with grace.
While he doesn't seem to mix things up very often, he doesn't really need to. He has a way about him that draws the viewer in, while also imparting fascinating pearls of wisdom. Stephen Colbert doesn't shy away from hard-hitting news commentary, and he does it in a way that is both engaging and informative. And it helps that he knows how to expertly time a punch line to keep people from getting bored and turning away.
1. The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
Honestly, there is no way that Jimmy Fallon loses this one. He is by far one of the best late night hosts. He knows how to handle serious topics with sensitivity and gravity, while also understanding when and how to bring a sense of humor to the table.
The Tonight Show might be a legacy series, with some amazing hosts coming before Fallon, he has brought his own sense of style to the show. No two episodes are ever the same, and he keeps us all guessing with a wide range of fun experiences with his guests. From bringing puppies to his show for any number of events, including the Super Bowl pre-show where he has the puppies pick the winning team, to the many musical challenges he takes on with his guests, Jimmy Fallon knows how to have fun.
While Fallon interacts with his band, he doesn't need a sidekick to carry his act. He is able to keep us engaged and entertained without any help.
