Seth Meyers has become one of the veterans of late night. He's spent a decade as the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, and despite not having the viral sketches of Jimmy Fallon or the outsized personality of Stephen Colbert, the comedian has managed to accrue a dedicated fanbase.

A big part of the reason Meyers has been so successful is that he's funny. He writes good material, and knows how to collaborate with his writers to craft memorable bits. It's the reason he was a head writer on Saturday Night Live from 2006 to 2014.

Now, Meyers is taking his talents back to the stand up stage. The talk show host announced plans for his first comedy special this decade. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the special was taped live at Chicago's Vic Theater, and will be premiering on HBO in the fall.

Nina Rosenstein, the executive Vice President of HBO programming, issued a statement praising Seth Meyers and his unique approach to stand up. "As longtime fans, we’re so happy to partner with Seth on his first HBO special," she wrote. "He’s such a charismatic storyteller and we’ve always loved the way he reaches people on such a personal level. This special is endlessly relatable and so much fun to watch."

Meyers' decision to tape a comedy special is fascinating, given how uncommon it is for established late night hosts. One can scarcely imagine Fallon, Colbert, or even Jimmy Kimmel attempting such a thing. Conan O'Brien only released a special after he'd be ousted from his Tonight Show gig by Jay Leno.

Meyers' previous special was released through Netflix

Meyers' first special, Lobby Baby, was released in 2019. The special was released through Netflix, meaning, that the upcoming, untitled special will mark his first ever collaboration with HBO. It will, however, bring back some of the same talent who worked on Lobby Baby.

It will produced by Irwin Entertainment, and will be directed by Neal Brennan, the comedian who handled behind-the-scenes duties on the last one. Of course, Meyers couldn't let the big news go without making a sarcastic remark. "Critics say it’s the special my kids will be talking about in therapy twenty years from now," he wrote in the aforementioned press release.
