Jimmy Fallon's SNL reunion on The Tonight Show didn't go over well
Jimmy Fallon is not known for being particularly mean-spirited. Quite the contrary, actually. He makes a point avoiding controversial targets, and deriving humor from more broad, accessible topics than his late night peers. Well, for the most part.
Fallon decided to poke fun at a specific Olympics contestant during a recent episode of The Tonight Show. The host decided to bring a fellow Saturday Night Live cast member, Rachel Dratch, on stage to portray Australian breakdancer "Raygun."
Fallon was joined by SNL alum Rachel Dratch
"Raygun," for context, went viral for her, well, awkward moves during the breakdancing competition. The internet quickly turned her into a meme, and the dancer, real name Rachel Gunn, took it in stride. Fans weren't crazy about Fallon and Dratch's late night parody, though.
The general consensus among viewers was that Fallon and his former SNL co-star were taking the bit a little too far, and making fun of someone who had already been through the ringer of the internet. It was an outdated bit by the time it got to The Tonight Show, but such is the problem with all late night TV in the internet age.
The internet didn't love the "Raygun" sketch
The fact that the tide has already begun to turn in Gunn's favor doesn't help. The breakdancer spoke to ESPN about her now infamous performance, and she was pretty forthright and humble about the whole thing.
"Creativity is really important to me," she told the outlet. "I go out there, and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about."
Rachel Dratch gives the Tonight Show sketch her all, as she usually does, but it does ultimately fall a bit flat. Here's hoping that the next Saturday Night Live reunion on the talk show hits a bit harder.
