How many times has Wolverine star Hugh Jackman hosted SNL?
Hugh Jackman is having a moment. The actor always closed the book on his iconic Wolverine role with the Oscar-nominated Logan in 2017. It was a huge gamble to return as the clawed mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine, but the gamble appears to have paid off.
The third installment in the Deadpool franchise has proven to be a massive hit with critics and fans alike. Jackman, in particular, is being singled out for his gruff, charismatic performance. Which got us to wondering: how many times has Jackman wielded his charisma on Saturday Night Live?
Hugh Jackman has only hosted SNL one time
Surely an actor as adept at him at drama, comedy, and even musicals would be a no-brainer to be a multiple-time host. Right? Well, apparently not. In fact, Jackman has only hosted SNL one time in his career. And that one time was over two decades ago.
Hugh Jackman made his Saturday Night Live debut on December 8, 2001. The actor was fresh off the success of the first X-Men film, to put into context how long ago it was. He was still getting his footing as a star, and a rewatch of his SNL performance makes it abundantly clear.
To be clear, Jackman gives it his all. He's not given the best material to work with, though. The biggest takeaway from his episode is that he got to dress up as Superman in a sketch about the Kryptonian's parents. It's fine. Bizarrely, this moment came full circle in the new Deadpool & Wolverine film, which Superman actor Henry Cavill made a cameo as a Wolverine variant.
Jackman made a brief cameo in a 2011 episode
While Jackman has never been asked back as a host, the actor has made a cameo on SNL since. He popped up on the 2011 episode hosted by Daniel Radcliffe, in which the actor did an impression of the Harry Potter star.
Jackman's lack of SNL history is something he has in common with his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star, Ryan Reynolds. The latter hosted a single episode in 2009, but the rumor is that the actor has since avoided the sketch show due to a desire to avoid ex-wife Scarlett Johansson.
Johansson is married to SNL head writer and Weekend Update host Colin Jost, and is subsequently at lots of the show's wrap parties.
