Every cameo by a Saturday Night Live alum in the season 50 premiere
Saturday Night Live is in celebration mode. The show has plenty to cover in terms of the upcoming election, but the 50th anniversary also means that there will plenty of references to the past. Lorne Michaels, the man who has led SNL for five decades, promised fans that "everyone" is coming back for cameos throughout the season.
This naturally set the bar high for the season 50 premiere, and it did not disappoint. The episode did a good job of juggling current events, and the comedic talents of host Jean Smart, with cameos from beloved SNL alum. There were only three cameos this week, but both of them proved to go over very well with the audience.
There were 3 SNL cameos in the cold open
The first was Maya Rudolph. It was already confirmed that the alum would be returning to play Kamala Harris throughout the presidential election, and she did not disappoint. Rudolph kicked things off with a cold open set at a campaign rally. She then introduced the other two notable cameos in the episode.
Andy Samberg returned to SNL to play Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff. He proceeded to depict Emhoff as a happy go lucky, slightly goofy presence during Harris' campaign rallies. The Lonely Island singer doesn't bear much of a natural resemblance to Emhoff, but the makeup and hairpiece did enough to get us there.
Dana Carvey returned as President Joe Biden
The other major SNL cameo in the season 50 premiere was even better. Kamala Harris reluctantly brought out the current president, Joe Biden, who proceeded to ramble and then return to the rally stage without being invited. Biden was played by legendary SNL cast member Dana Carvey.
Carvey is one of the most gifted impressionists in the show's history, so it should come as no surprise that he nails Biden's stop-and-start delivery and unexpected tangents. Biden has been played by multiple comedians in the past, including Jim Carrey and Jason Sudeikis, but Carvey may have given us the best SNL iteration we've seen thus far.
