Doug Emhoff give thumbs up to Andy Samberg impression on SNL

Doug Emhoff has experienced increased visibility in recent months. The second gentleman has a chance to become the first, first gentleman in the history of the United States. And he got an honor much less prestigious, though perhaps even more to fun to discuss: he was the subject of an SNL impersonation.

Emhoff was one of the many political figures who was depicted during the cold open for the season 50 premiere of Saturday Night Live. There was Kamala Harris, played by Maya Rudolph, and Donald Trump, played by James Austen Johnson. Then there was Emhoff, played by returning alum Andy Samberg.

Samberg was fitted with a hairpiece and some makeup to sell Emhoff likeness, but it was his goofy approach to the second gentleman that garnered most of the attention (and the laughs).

Emhoff admitted that he watched the cold open during a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, and he admitted that he was actually pleased with what Samberg did:

"I’ve been watching that show my whole life and to think somebody’s playing me, first of all, it’s just so… wow. And then I gotta hand it [to him], Andy Samberg did a good job!"

Emhoff 'approved' of Andy Samberg's portrayal

Emhoff wasn't totally sure of what Samberg was going for at different points during the sketch, noting that he was amused by the comedian's dance moves, but he found the whole impersonation to be a fair and charming send up.

"I approve," Emhoff asserted. "Andy, good job. I love… the second gentlemensch line was pretty good. His little Dougie coming in." While Saturday Night Live has been known for switching up which actors play politicians, SNL is going to be staying the course and sticking with the same casting for the bulk of season 50.

This means Samberg will play Emhoff up through the election. Good thing the second gentleman likes the performance!
