Dana Carvey reveals hilarious change made to Trump impression on SNL
Dana Carvey is one of the revered cast members in Saturday Night Live history. He's considered to be the show's best impressionist, so it makes sense that boss Lorne Michaels would bring him back to play President Joe Biden in season 50.
Carvey was hilarious during the cold open for the season 50 premiere, and will return to play Biden for the rest of the season. The comedian confirmed as much during an episode of his podcast Fly on the Wall. He also told co-host and fellow SNL David Spade about the changes made to the Donald Trump impression.
James Austen Johnson now wears a fat suit to play Trump
Trump is still being played by current SNL cast member James Austin Johnson. The comedian has really nailed down the former President's voice and mannerisms, so bringing him back seemed like a no-brainer.
Lorne Michaels did, however, tell The Hollywood Reporter that he planed to reinvent the way SNL portrayed Trump in the current season. He didn't provide details as to how, which is why Carvey's podcast revelation is so funny.
Apparently, the "how" involved a fat suit. “They’re trying to sort of update Trump a little bit," he noted. "They gave him a 'bigger, whoop-dee-doo' fat suit." Carvey and Spade both laughed about the added "padding" that was applied to Johnson.
The comedian has also been given a bald cap
The physical tweaks don't stop there. Apparently, a bald cap has also been added to the comedian's make-up requirements:
"They put a bald cap on [him] because Trump is thinning in the back a little bit."
These changes make sense. There have been alterations made to the appearance of President Joe Biden during his presidency, as well, especially since so many different actors have stepped in to play him.
Carvey had kind words for all of the actors who have been brought in to portray politicians in season 50, including Johnson, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg and SNL newcomer Jim Gaffigan. Carvey said that Gaffigan was nervous given his inexperience with impressions, but in the end he "crushed it."
