Bowen Yang claims Saturday Night Live is 'cringiest' job in Hollywood
Bowen Yang is the resident star on Saturday Night Live. He's the first Chinese-American cast member in series history, as well as the first featured player to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. He also knows what average pop culture consumers think of Saturday Night Live.
Yang spoke about his complicated relationship with SNL during a recent episode of Las Culturistas podcast. He admitted that it was a professional dream of his to become a series cast member, but recalls the negative feedback he got back in 2018.
Bowen Yang has been impacted by fan backlash
The comedian described Saturday Night Live as "cringe mountain" relative to the comedy found on platforms like TikTok:
"B**ch, I know about working through cringe, climbing a cringe mountain, I work at Saturday f**king Night Live, the cringiest thing in show business on every level."
Yang expanded on this bold statement by assuring fans and listeners that he absolutely loves his time on SNL. "Eternally grateful that I work there, will be the defining thing of my life and career," he noted. The frustration that the comedian runs into, however, is when people repeatedly tell him that the it's not as good as it used to be.
Yang has learned to embrace his SNL 'cringe'
"To live through working at SNL and to have people constantly tell you how much it sucks, how bad it is, how it’s not as good as it used to be, for your career," Yang explained. "That has to do something to you psychologically."
As a veteran cast member at this point, Bowen Yang has figured out how to make peace with his feelings towards SNL, and the pusback he recieves from fans. His solution? Embrace the cringe. It may sound silly, but SNL is a silly show to begin with.
Yang's Culturistas co-host, Matt Rogers, spoke on the power of embracing the qualities of the show that make people happy. "You have to sometimes climb up a huge hill of cringe," he told the SNL star. "On the other end, you slide down into happiness and nirvana."
Do you agree with Yang's assessment? Are fans being too harsh on SNL these days?
