Parole officer kept one celebrity from hosting Saturday Night Live

For many celebrities, there's a relatively small window in which they are considered for hosting Saturday Night Live. One celebrity had that window slammed shut, not by SNL, Lorne Michaels, or the network, but by their parole officers.

Television personality Martha Stewart revealed Lorne Michaels asked her to host Saturday Night Live in 2005. The SNL boss likely wanted to capitalize on the timing, as Stewart had just been released from serving five months in prison for a fraud conviction.

"I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp I was in for a while,” Stewart said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it … That bastard! I still have his name and his number.”

According to Stewart, the parameters of her parole limited her time outside of the house to eight hours per day. Of course, that wouldn't work with Saturday Night Live's all-day and all-night schedule.

Jimmy Fallon endorsed Stewart as a Saturday Night Live host. She agreed, suggesting she'd be excellent at the gig before encouraging the audience to start a campaign on her behalf.

Martha Stewart hasn't appeared on SNL, but she's been impersonated many times

Martha Stewart has been a public figure for decades. But even before her prison term, she's never so much as made a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live.

However, SNL has featured Stewart countless times thanks to cast impressions. In fact, Stewart has to rank among the most-impersonated celebrities in SNL history.

Nine different cast members have played Stewart on SNL. The list includes Janeane Garofalo, Nancy Walls, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, David Spade, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Chloe Fineman.

The real Martha Stewart told The Tonight Show that Spade's impression is her favorite. But despite SNL taking some pretty hard shots at Stewart, she considers it something of an hono

“Imitation is the highest form of flattery,” she told Fallon. “And you might as well be imitated!”
