Amid the ongoing attacks against late-night hosts, Seth Meyers has somehow managed to fly relatively under the radar of President Donald Trump. In taking aim at The Late Show host Stephen Colbert and celebrating the cancellation of his show, President Trump has made several pointed remarks about Colbert and also used his show’s cancellation to take a series of shots at both Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon.
In the wake of The Late Show’s cancellation, President Trump has been actively gunning for The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live hosts to be next to go. He’s even gone as far as to claim that Kimmel is next and that Fallon will be gone soon enough. He’s also launched a flurry of personal attacks at the two hosts, calling Fallon a moron, claiming both hosts have no talent, and blaming them for “destroying what used to be great television.”
Through it all, Fallon and Kimmel have been President Trump’s primary targets, but it seems he’s now locked in on a new target and has fired off a major verbal attack against Meyers.
Late on August 26, President Trump took to Truth Social to single out the Late Night host in connection to what he called a “sick rumor” about NBC extending Meyers’ contract. In the rant, President Trump called Meyers “one of the least talented late-night television hosts out there” and then proceeded to take a series of shots at NBC’s Emmy-winning host.
“There is a sick rumor going around that Fake News NBC extended the contract of one of the least talented Late Night television hosts out there, Seth Meyers,” President Trump wrote. “He has no Ratings, Talent, or Intelligence, and the Personality of an insecure child. So, why would Fake News NBC extend this dope’s contract. I don’t know, but I’ll definitely be finding out!!!”
It’s unclear what rumors President Trump is referring to that prompted his attack against Meyers. Meyers’ contract is not up, nor is there an active need for it to be extended. This is because Meyers literally just signed a contract extension last May, which ensures he’ll continue hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers through 2028.
Perhaps the post was inspired by recent comments from Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who just last week told Puck News that he had been assured by Comcast’s CEO that Fallon and Meyers weren’t in any danger and wouldn’t be going anywhere. Regardless, Meyers remains in good standing with NBC and Late Night is doing just fine when it comes to viewership, and continues to stand as the most-watched late-night program in its time slot.
