Molly Shannon reprises iconic SNL character for bizarre Kamala Harris sketch
Saturday Night Live has always had a complicated relationship with politicians. It has been satirizing them since 1975, but occasionally, the show will team up with politicians or even allow them to host. SNL boss Lorne Michaels decided not to allow politicians on the show for season 50, but that hasn't stopped Kamala Harris from getting an SNL co-sign.
The Democratic Presidential nominee was not able to attend the Al Smith Dinner, making her the first nominee in four decades to miss it. She did, however, sent in a pre-recorded sketch in which she had an awkward interaction with Mary Katherine Gallagher aka "Superstar."
Mary Katherine Gallagher gave Harris advice
Gallagher is, of course, the name of a fictional character that Molly Shannon made famous on SNL. The alum played Gallagher in a series of sketches throughout the 1990s, culminating in a feature film titled Superstar in 1999.
Harris was repeatedly interrupted by Shannon's character while she was trying to give a speech. The latter reminds Harris not to insult the Catholics during her Al Smith Dinner statement, and Harris has a response that earned mixed reactions online. She likened insulting Catholics to bad-mouthing the people who live in Detroit while in Detroit.
The duo also cracked jokes and quoted Taylor Swift
The rest of the sketch took on a more preachy than comedic vibe. Harris reminded Gallagher that she should never be afraid to be herself:
"It's very important to always remember: You should never let anyone tell you who you are. You tell them who you are."
Shannon then decided to work in some Taylor Swift lyrics from 2014 to put the bow on a pretty agonizing sketch. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate. Shake it off," she yells, while Harris agrees. It was unexpected to see Shannon dig bag into her comedic bag and dust off her most iconic character, but it did not have the side-splitting results that we were hoping for.
