When the government shutdown came to an end with some of the Democrats deciding to side with the Republicans, it wasn't surprising to see it become talking points for the late night TV hosts. Three, in particular, have shared their thoughts.
Yes, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers used segments in their talk shows, The Late Show, The Daily Show, and Late Night, respectively, to discuss the hot topic. And it shouldn’t be that surprising that the three of them were the most vocal of all the talk show hosts out there.
Jon Stewart likens the move to a sports game and Star Wars on The Daily Show
Jon Stewart decided to use two analogies to help people understand his frustrations during his opening monologue on The Daily Show during Monday, Nov. 10. At first, he focused on how the eight Democrats who ended up siding with the Republicans were like a sporting team that is 10 points up with just three minutes left. They somehow end up losing the game for the fourth time in a month.
He then moved on to a Star Wars analogy, sharing how the country was just “shaking off Trump’s Jedi mind tricks,” only to end up falling for them again. It led to the Democrats squandering their leverage and sapping the enthusiasm of the voters.
Stephen Colbert focused on what wasn’t achieved
During Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue on The Late Show, he put his focus on one Senator in particular, Jeanne Shaheen. As he went on to ask why the senators aren’t working together, he made his thoughts about the insanity of the people running the country clear.
He also made it clear just how little was achieved in the Democrats buckling under the pressure. The government shutdown wasn’t easy for anyone. Jimmy Kimmel Live! had opened a food bank to help deal with the SNAP issues, while there were plenty of frustrations going out about the delays at airports. It didn’t matter which side of the political sphere people were on, they were encouraged to reach out to their senators to get everyone to work together.
In the end, nothing for the Democrats was achieved. With the fold, there’s no need for Republicans to even consider holding up any agreement that was potentially made behind the scenes.
Seth Meyers points out who people were blaming
Then there was Seth Meyers, who took to Late Night to share that the Democrats had people behind them. Plenty of people put the blame on the Republican Party and Trump. There was support for the Democrats to keep pushing for affordable health care. And yet, they crumbled.
It makes those who did support the Democrats wonder what the pain was for. Meyers also joked that of course all the wins was the perfect time to cave.
He did make his own analogy on the subject, likening it to going to a car dealership. They see a car worth $30,000 but offer $50,000 and their wives.
At least we can say one thing: it doesn’t matter who makes a decision, there’s something for the late night talk show hosts to offer their commentary on.
