The premiere episode of Saturday Night Live UK finally arrived on Saturday night, with original SNL legend Tina Fey tapped to host the historic debut. While the choice raised a few eyebrows, Fey ultimately proved to be a perfect bridge between the franchise’s origins and its next chapter. And she had plenty of help along the way.
As a former head writer and one of the most influential figures in Saturday Night Live history, Fey brought credibility and experience to a brand-new cast and production team finding their footing. Her presence helped ground the premiere, giving SNL UK a steady hand as it introduced itself to audiences.
Still, the show didn’t ignore the elephant in the room: why an American was front and center on such a distinctly British night. Instead, the monologue leaned into it by bringing out a pair of stars beloved in the UK to both question and celebrate Fey’s role.
First up was Nicola Coughlan, best known for her roles in Derry Girls and Bridgerton. Playing the role of curious viewers at home, Coughlan directly asked Fey why she was hosting instead of a British icon. Fey fired back with a biting joke: none of “you f***ers” wanted to do it.," and when she asked Coughlan for an explanation, the actress quickly reminded Fey that she's in fact, Irish.
The moment got a big laugh, and Fey gladly allowed it to be at her expense. The joke aslo quickly set the tone for a monologue that embraced the cultural divide rather than danced around it.
Next, the monologue welcomed Graham Norton, one of the UK’s most recognizable television personalities and a staple of British late-night with The Graham Norton Show. Norton revealed that SNL UK was, in fact, using his studio. Therefore, the host couldn't help himself and had to jump on stage to chat with Fey.
Norton quizzed Fey on her knowledge of British television and culture, teasing that it would help make the American star more likeable for those watching at home in the UK. Fey obliged, running through impressions from British classics like Absolutely Fabulous, Shopgirl, and Keeping Up Appearances.
The segment worked on multiple levels. It acknowledged Fey’s outsider status and gave UK stars a chance to shine on opening night. The monologue also gave fans a glimpse into what will make Saturday Night Live UK differ, namely the freedom to curse when the moment calls for it.
If the goal of the premiere was to introduce SNL UK as both familiar and new, this was a smart and funny way to do it. Now, British stars Jamie Dornan and Riz Ahmed will have some momentum behind them as they host the next two episodes.
