Larry David has never been one to let a disagreement slide or to hide his true feelings. That includes his thoughts on a late-night TV host, which Jerry Seinfeld recently confirmed is very much still an issue for the Curb Your Enthusiasm star.
Speaking with the New York Times, Seinfeld admitted that David still holds a grudge against Real Time host Bill Maher. It all stems from Maher's 2025 dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump. After the meal, the late-night TV star admitted that President Trump wasn't as "crazy" as he appears on television and is, in fact, cordial and self-aware.
David responded by authoring a satirical essay in the Times titled "My Dinner with Adolf." The piece has some fairly obvious parallels between the narrator and Hitler and Maher and Trump. The Real Time host responded to David in a separate interview, suggesting that invoking Hitler was a losing argument and an insult to Holocaust victims.
“They both got kind of bugged out," Seinfeld said. The legendary comedian has a close friendship and professional partnership with David, and he's been friendly with Maher since the '70s. Seinfeld also sent in a prerecorded video tribute for Maher's ceremony accepting the Mark Twain Prize. "Their friendship doesn't really do anything for me," Seinfeld added, suggesting he doesn't really care that the pair of comedians aren't on good terms.
For Maher, it's another example of how the Donald Trump era has put him at odds with his fellow comedians and late-night hosts. While Real Time has been critical of Trump's policies, it hardly compares to what has been said on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Plus, Maher has always taken swipes at liberals and "woke" culture that tends to rub people the wrong way.
Earlier this year, Maher admitted that Kimmel was "very mad" at him and seems unlikely to ever speak with him again. The feud stems from Maher's criticism of Molly McNearney, Kimmel's wife, saying she has cut off family members who support President Trump.
Back in 2023, Maher revealed on is podcast that he doesn't like Colbert and the former Late Show host doesn't like him. Without going into specifics, Maher agreed with his podcast guest that Colbert is "giving the machine what it wants." Apparently, Maher believed Colbert's comedy has become too focused on pandering to the left.
Maher's tendency to find himself in feuds may be a contributing factor to why Jay Leno appeared as the only late-night host at his Mark Twain Prize ceremony. It stood out considering Maher has spent decades in the genre, and past late-night personalities received strong support from their peers.
In the end, it doesn't sound like Maher or David (or Jerry Seinfeld) are really worried about the feud. Maher's entire career is built on him saying what he thinks regardless of the response it gets.
