Performing on a late-night TV show isn't exactly a high-risk job. But that doesn't mean there haven't been a few mishaps along the way, most recently the Daily Show's Jon Stewart slicing his hand on air.
Stewart's injury came during his monologue on February 25. While bashing Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency, Stewart shatted a mug and suffered a laceration on his hand.
He continued with the monologue, hiding his hand under the desk. But when he finally lifted it to show the audience his blood-covered hand, it got an audible groan from the crowd.
Stewart isn't the first late-night TV personality to suffer an injury on set (off set is a different story). Thankfully, they are few and far between.
Conan O'Brien's concussion
Conan O'Brien has never shied away from physical comedy during his late-night TV career. However, it backfired during a Tonight Show episode in September 2009.
O'Brien raced Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher for a bit, only to slip and hit his head off the floor. The comedy legend tried to continue on with the show, but found it difficult to read the teleprompter and felt disoriented. A trip to the hospital resulted in a concussion diagnosis.
The episode never aired in full, but O'Brien still shared the clip and made sure to crack a few jokes at his own expense.
Stephen Colbert's broken wrist
Maybe late-night TV sets are more dangerous than we thought. Stephen Colbert also fell on the set of The Colbert Report, breaking his wrist in the process.
The incident came in 2007 while Colbert was warming up for the show. He turned the injury into a long-running bit on the show, getting celebrities to sign his cast before eventually auctioning it off. Colbert also sold "WristStrong" bracelets for charity.
Saturday Night Live cast injuries
For 50 years, Saturday Night Live has been asking cast members to test their limits when it comes to physical comedy. And a live show put together in a matter of days is going to be prone to some accidents.
Chevy Chase, an original cast member, made a name for himself by falling over. But one sketch in which he played President Gerald Ford cost Chase two episodes to recover when there wasn't any padding for his fall.
Molly Shannon told the Fly on the Wall podcast that she'd wake up with cuts and bruises on her body the day after playing Mary Katherine Gallagher.
Chris Kattan suffered perhaps the most devastating injury in Saturday Night Live history. The former cast member claims he broke his neck during a Golden Girls-inspired sketch in 2001. According to Kattan, he fell back in his chair and slammed his head. The result was multiple surgeries and an addiction issue.
Conan O'Brien vs. a water buffalo
Conan O'Brien gets the honor of appearing on this list twice. The Tonight Show concussion wasn't the only time he put his body on the line for comedy.
For a 2012 episode of Conan, the comedian welcomed an animal expert. Apparently, a staff member suggested O'Brien ride on the back of a water buffalo to get some laughs. The host agreed, but when he tried to mount the buffalo during rehearsal, he was tossed to the floor.
The result was a sizeable bruise, which O'Brien gladly showed off to his audience, who gasped in horror at the size and color of the injury.
