John Mulaney's Netflix talk show Everybody's Live has a comfortable spot on Wednesday nights. And while it may seem odd for a once-a-week show to air on Wednesdays, Mulaney had a good reason why ... and for why he nixed Netflix's original title.
In May, Mulaney debuted Everybody's In LA. The comedian and his panel of guests took a deep dive on the issues facing Los Angeles, like coyotes, palm trees, and the future of the city. It, like just about everything else Mulaney does, was a hit.
Enter Everybody's Live, the new version of Mulaney's talk show that expands the topics beyond the boundaries of Los Angeles. The show streams live on Wednesday nights thanks in part to Mulaney's thoughtful strategy.
"Wednesday is traditionally the hottest night of the week," Mulaney joked during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He went on to explain he did not want to try competing with Saturday Night Live on Saturdays.
Mulaney considered doing the show on Fridays, but Netflix's schedule was full with its wrestling broadcast. Thursdays were also off the table because the streaming service debuts new shows that night. Netflix made it clear it would be promoting its new shows much more than Everybody's Live if that were the case.
The comedian admitted he finally agreed to Wednesday because he was so tired of the conversation. But considering Mulaney's following, it's unlikely that the day of the week matters to those eager to tune in and watch.
Netflix had an idea for what to call John Mulaney's talk show
Netflix and John Mulaney have proven to be a productive partnership. Mulaney's stand-up specials and The Sack Lunch Bunch are all successfully streaming on the platform.
However, that doesn't always mean the two see eye-to-eye on things. That was the case when it came to naming Everybody's Live.
Mulaney told Jimmy Kimmel that Netflix was adament about getting "live" in the title. But the comedian didn't like how close "John Mulaney Live" sounded to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, even if the ABC late-night show hasn't been live in years.
"Netflix has a lot of data on titles," Mulaney shared, "and they'll tell you what works and what pops. And then I saw they have a show called Apple Cider Vinegar, so..."
The decision was ultimately made to stick with Everybody's Live. Again, the title could be "John Mulaney's Netflix Talk Show" and the numbers would likely end up the same. Mulaney's following is undeniable ... something Netflix probably has the data to back up.
Everybody's Live streams on Wednesday nights beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET.
