Jimmy Kimmel warns Los Angeles against making ‘the same mistake’ with Spencer Pratt

Jimmy Kimmel used his Wednesday night monologue to break down why he believes the growing support behind Spencer Pratt's mayoral bid could be a huge mistake for the city of Los Angeles. The late-night host explained why the reality star has too much in common with the sitting president.

Kimmel started off by agreeing that there are several problems facing the city at the moment. The comedian noted that the aftermath of the Pacific Palisades fires remain an issue, with residents still without homes, businesses in need of repair, and people without homes all adding an untenable level of stress to Los Angeles.

From there, Kimmel shifted his focus to one-time reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who has gained renewed attention after losing his home in the fires and becoming increasingly outspoken online about city leadership. Kimmel acknowledged that Pratt is understandably upset about what happened to his home, but also suggested the former Hills star doesn't have any solutions.

Kimmel argued that Pratt’s popularity surge has less to do with policy ideas and more to do with visibility and celebrity culture. “So then this reality star who grew up wealthy and popular who is not very wealthy and popular anymore starts to enjoy the attention and thinks, ‘You know, I should be mayor’ — which is a statement that should make everyone laugh,” Kimmel continued.

The late-night host then compared Pratt’s rise in attention to Donald Trump, arguing that celebrity and self-promotion can sometimes outweigh experience in modern politics. “This is exactly what Donald Trump did,” Kimmel said. “I know this for a fact: Donald Trump ran for president because his TV show was going to get canceled and he wanted to be relevant again."

Kimmel closed the segment with a direct warning to Los Angeles voters ahead of the city’s next mayoral election. The comedian argued that electing Pratt would be making the same mistake as electing President Trump. The late-night host doesn't want another reality star in charge, especially considering the $14 billion budget Los Angeles operates under as a city.

So does that mean Kimmel endorses current mayor Karen Bass? Not necessarily, but he just encouraged the Jimmy Kimmel Live! viewers in Los Angeles to vote for anyone other than Pratt. The way Kimmel sees it, Bass doesn't have to be the answer to the city's problems. But his preference would be a mayor that "isn’t wasting our time and money to get himself back on television.”

From Pratt's perspective, he probably welcomes the attention from Kimmel. The late-night host isn't treating Pratt as a joke, even if he's making jokes at the mayoral candidate's expense. And Kimmel also put Pratt in some elite company by comparing him to President Trump.

Pratt has a long history with late-night TV thanks to his days on The Hills. He's been interviewed by David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, and yes, even Kimmel. If Pratt belives that all publicity is good publicity, he's probably hoping Kimmel gives him more airtime as the election draws near.
