It's been an interesting week in the late night space, to say the least, in the wake of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's abrupt and shocking cancellation by CBS. Although Colbert has drawn the ire of the current President of the United States following CBS' decision to end the show, citing it as a "financial decision," he's gained a lot more support from his fellow late night hosts.
In his The Tonight Show monologue on July 21, 2025, Jimmy Fallon continued to stand by Colbert and quip a few jokes at the expense of CBS and the situation at hand. "I am your host... Well, at least for tonight," Fallon began. "I don't like it. I don't like what's going on one bit. These are crazy times." Fallon joked the network could lose millions of viewers "plus 10s of hundreds watching on Paramount+."
Jimmy Fallon shows more support to Stephen Colbert
While Fallon wasn't nearly as fired up as Jon Stewart, who delivered his own expletive filled response on The Daily Show, or even Colbert's pointed mic-drop one-liner on The Late Show, Fallon stood up for his friend and late night peer and further skewered President Trump in his monologue. He might be bringing softballs into this battle, but he's on Colbert's side. Check out the monologue below!
Fallon wasn't solely throwing barbs at CBS and President Trump, but he was once again lifting up Colbert. He had previously shared a statement about the cancellation on social media, but Fallon again doubled down on his support for Colbert, noting his years of "smart and hilarious television," which includes his 10 Emmy Award wins. It's a startling figure to consider given what's happening.
In addition to Jimmy Fallon speaking up about Colbert's firing and the situation with CBS, as well as its political implications, he also showed up in another huge way for Colbert. The Late Show welcomed a number of surprise guests that included Fallon and other New York late night hosts Seth Meyers, Jon Stewart, and John Oliver, as well as Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, and other guests.
Their cameos were tied to a parody of the viral video that took over social media last week from the Coldplay concert that caught an affair on the kiss cam. That's quite the hilarious way for all of these late night hosts to not only make light of a super-viral moment that took over the internet while rallying behind one of their colleagues that has been unfairly sidelined.
Even though Jimmy Kimmel wasn't in attendance for the Colbert cameos, since his ABC late night show is based in Los Angeles, he has still been a vocal supporter of Colbert and has taken on the remarks President Trump has hurled his way head-on. It's safe to say that the fight over late night is far from over. Just wait until Saturday Night Live gets back on the air and has its say.
