Final countdown: Late Show returns tonight as Stephen Colbert begins final run of shows

The end is near for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. After a week of reruns, The Late Show is back tonight with a fresh batch of episodes ... and the beginning of the end is officially here.

Host Stephen Colbert returns Monday night to kick off the show’s first original episodes of May, as the long-running CBS late-night show heads toward its series finale on May 21. With just a few weeks left, Colbert has plenty of ground to cover after the break, including one of late-night’s most talked-about controversies.

Expect Colbert to have something to say about the escalating situation involving President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump publicly calling for ABC to take action against Jimmy Kimmel Live! host Jimmy Kimmel. The controversy has dominated headlines over the past week, making it all but certain Colbert will weigh in and come to his friend's defense.

Beyond that, this week’s guest lineup suggests Late Show is aiming to go out in style. Colbert has a few surprises planned, letting fans in on what to expect as he prepares to say goodbye after 11 years behind the desk.

Monday night’s premiere features blockbuster filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who is set to debut a new trailer for his upcoming film The Odyssey. Rock legend Dave Grohl also stops by, alongside a performance from Foo Fighters, who are promoting a new album, Your Favorite Toy.

Tuesday brings the highly anticipated conversation with President Barack Obama. Colbert sat down with the former president in Chicago to help promote the Barack Obama Presidential Center opening next month. Expect the interview to get some buzz, including from the current White House resident.

On Wednesday, Oscar winner Sally Field joins Colbert to promote her Netflix movie Remarkably Bright Creatures. The episode also comes with a musical performance by country star Chris Stapleton. Plus, we'll be treated to a special Mother’s Day edition of the fan-favorite “First Drafts” segment with Evie McGee Colbert, whose recurring appearances over the years have made her a fan-favorite part of the show.

Thursday’s episode continues the star power with John Krasinski as he hypes up Jack Ryan: Ghost War. The show also features the final installment of the recurring “Kids Pitch” segment. The sendoff will include appearances from Jenny Slate, Liam Neeson, John Oliver, Isa Briones, Taylor Dearden, and The Avett Brothers.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS. Episodes are also available via streaming on Paramount+.
