Donald Trump will never return to Stephen Colbert's show (and here's why)

The comedian has a theory as to why Trump is avoiding him.

Stephen Colbert and Donald Trump are oil and water. Chalk and cheese. Any combination of things that do not gel. Both men know it, and have spoken on it. Some fans may think that Colbert has taken the Seth Meyers route, and banned the former president from appearing on his show.

In reality, the opposite is true. Donald Trump has actually been on Colbert's version of The Late Show, but he has not returned since. There's no ban placed on him, but Colbert has taken some steps to see to it that Trump doesn't want to return.

Colbert labeled Trump 'boring' during his lone appearance

Colbert talked about these steps during a recent interview with PBS. He admitted that he called Donald Trump "boring" during their Late Show convo because he knew it would wind the former president up. And he was right:

"“He’s clearly upset because I called him boring, and I called him boring because I knew it would upset him. Which it did, because he’s so predictable."

Colbert doubled down on his taunts during a Sirius XM interview with Bill Carter. He labeled Trump a "chicken" for not returning to the Late Show, and joked about the former president having a thin skin when it comes to mockery, despite his propensity for bullying others.

Colbert challenged Trump to return to the show

“He’s got a great sense of humor about himself," Colbert asserted. "I’m sure he won’t mind." Colbert also took the opportunity to rag on Trump during a 2020 appearance on Watch What Happens with Andy Cohen.

Cohen asked the Late Show host who his least favorite guest was, and he promptly responded with Trump. Why? Because, as he previously stated, he found the whole experience to be "boring" and a bit disappointing given Trump's outsized reputation.

"I did once and he was actually kind of disappointing because he played the reasonable man," the comedian noted. "He's always kind of in persona mode and sometimes he plays like the rallying populist." We don't foresee a Late Show encounter between these two ever happening again.
