There's a disappointing (but not too surprising) update about South Park

If you missed South Park’s Thanksgiving episode, you’ll want to turn your attention to Paramount+. Yes, there was an episode that aired on Thanksgiving Eve, despite most shows going on a break.

It’s not all that surprising the show opted for an episode on the eve of Thanksgiving. After all, it’s one of those shows that gets away with the on-off ratings, because it’s so successful in syndication numbers. This is why the upcoming bad news isn’t all that surprising.

South Park is going on another break

When it comes to animated comedies (and any show for that matter) consistency tends to be key. It’s hard for a series to get to season 28 with the type of on-off schedule that South Park has had. And yes, here we are with this series still going strong without a consistent schedule.

There isn’t going to be an episode on Wednesday, Dec. 3, and in a way, that’s not too surprising. We tend to get an episode and then a couple of weeks off before the next episode. It’s just something that we’ve become used to, right?

There is one more episode of 2025 to come, though. South Park season 28 episode 5 is slated to air on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 10/9c on Comedy Central.

We’re nearing the end of another season of South Park

Now for more bad (but also unsurprising) news. The end of season 28 is nigh. The fifth episode of the season is going to be the last. At least, according to USA Today.

But again, this does make sense. Previous seasons have only had five or six episodes. When Trey Parker and Matt Stone signed their five-year deal with Paramount+ in July 2025, it was for 10 episodes per year. It looks like that’s going to be five episodes per season.

This is just the first year of this deal, so we should get another four years of 10 episodes per year. How those episodes will be split isn’t all that clear, as originally, many expected the first episode of season 28 to be episode 6 of season 27, but then there was a change of plan at the last minute. With previous seasons before the deal having five or six episodes, it does make sense for five episodes per season moving forward.

There is no word on when South Park season 29 will premiere just yet, but we’re expecting it in 2026.

South Park is available to stream on Paramount+.
