Bowen Yang sets new project, and it's live from New York

Just a few months removed from his departure from Saturday Night Live earlier this season, Bowen Yang is heading back to familiar territory. The former SNL cast member will return to New York to help with a different kind of live comedy.

Yang has joined the producing team of Titanique, as the cult-favorite musical parody begins its limited Broadway run. Tony-winning producer Eva Price announced this week that Yang, alongside his Las Culturistas podcast co-host Matt Rogers and *NSYNC members Joey Fatone and JC Chasez, has boarded the production team.

The award-winning musical parodies the 1997 film Titanic, and it includes a soundtrack inspired by Céline Dion. Co-writing credits belong to Tye Blue, Marla Mindelle, and Constantine Rousouli.

Yang does have a connection to the material goes back to his time at Saturday Night Live. He famously portrayed the iceberg that struck the Titanic during a “Weekend Update” segment. The absurd bit quickly went viral and became a fan-favorite, cementing it as one of Yang's signature moments on the show.

The production also boasts some personal overlap for Yang. The cast includes Frankie Grande as Victor Garber. Yang previously co-starred with Frankie’s sister, Ariana Grande, in both installments of Wicked. The pop star even went so far as to call in a favor to Lorne Michaels to free up Yang's schedule for the films. And it was Grande who hosted Yang’s final episode of SNL, helping send him off in style.

While Titanique marks Yang’s latest move into live comedy, it’s far from his only project in the pipeline. He’s set to lend his voice to the 2026 remake of The Cat in the Hat, which stars Saturday Night Live great Bill Hader and features a co-starring role for former SNL writer Paula Pell.

Yang will also feature in the animated drama Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother and Me, alongside Bryan Cranston and Seth Rogen. He won't be the only SNL alum in the cast, as Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Sarah Silverman also have roles in the film.

Between producing on Broadway, voice acting roles in movies, and his co-hosting his ongoing Las Culturistas podcast with Rogers, Yang’s post-SNL career is shaping up to be just as busy as his time on the iconic sketch show. But when it comes to making comedy for a live studio audience, few people know the formula better than Yang.
