Stephen Colbert’s monologue last night once again poured salt in the wounds of Kevin McCarthy. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert came to the defense of Democrats who the former Speaker of the House blamed for losing his job.

Colbert’s monologue the night before waved goodbye to McCarthy, calling his ousting an “unprecedented humiliation.” Yet McCarthy didn’t go quietly and his press conference targeting Democrats caught the attention of The Late Show.

McCarthy gave a lengthy press conference after eight Republicans led the push to vote him out of office as the Speaker of the House. However, McCarthy called it a “political decision by Democrats.”

Colbert gave an incredulous response to McCarthy’s attempt to reframe the story. He reminded his audience it took 15 votes to get McCarthy the gig. That included McCarthy accepting the condition that any one member of Congress could call for his vote. “Really?” Colbert asked. “You handed a straight razor to the craziest, most selfish nihilist in the entire MAGA mob and said just hold this to my neck, and if I say or do one thing you don’t like just slice away, and you’re blaming the Democrats?”

Stephen Colbert continues to kick Kevin McCarthy while he’s down

And when Kevin McCarthy tried to romanticize his political career, Stephen Colbert’s monologue came prepared to rain on his parade again. McCarthy shared how he started by applying to be a congressman’s intern. “You know what he did? He turned me down,” McCarthy said. “But you want to know the end of the story? I got elected to a seat I couldn’t get an internship for; I ended up being the 55th Speaker of the House.”

But Colbert wasn’t going to let McCarthy end the story there. “Turns out that’s actually not the end of the story,” Colbert quipped. “I’d love to see Kevin McCarthy do movie recaps. ‘Titanic, beautiful boat, so cool that it’s unsinkable. Can’t wait to see what hijinks Jack and Rose get up to in the sequel.”

It doesn’t appear as if the “unprecedented humiliation” he faced will keep Kevin McCarthy away from the cameras. Stephen Colbert’s monologues should have a few more chances to remind McCarthy that he shoulders all the blame.
