Bill Maher calls out Joe Biden as too old to run for president

Joe Biden’s decision to run for a second term will turn the country over to Donald Trump. That was the argument coming from Bill Maher as Real Time with Bill Maher returned to the air Friday night.

After a months-long hiatus due to the Writers Guild of America strike, Real Time with Bill Maher made a splash as it went back online. Maher interviewed Ron DeSantis and wasted no time sharing some of his strongest opinions on the 2024 election.

“Someone has to convince President Biden that if he runs again, he’s going to turn the country back over to Trump and go down in history as Ruth Bader Biden,” Maher said. The line kicked off the late-night TV host’s “New Rule” segment on Friday night.

However, Maher believes that Joe Biden can do the job of being president. The problem is getting back to the White House for a second term.

Maher argued that the campaign season is long and taxing. He cited instances of Biden forgetting someone’s name or slipping. Perception is reality, says Maher, and he believes the general public sees Biden as frail compared to the slightly younger Trump.

Bill Maher says another Democrat should run instead of Joe Biden

Bill Maher’s take on Joe Biden’s age isn’t a unique argument. It was discussed even back when Biden first ran ahead of the 2020 election.

Maher acknowledges that Trump is just as old and even has his own list of gaffes and shaky moments on stage. The Real Time host has long defended aging and called out examples of ageism when he saw it. But Maher doesn’t think he’s been hypocritical in this instance, arguing that he’s always advocated for a case-by-case basis when it comes to someone’s age and ability to do a job.

“[T]he credibility of my argument against agism rests on the honest calling out of people when it is time to go that’s what case by case means,” Maher said. But Maher’s take on Biden directly contradicts his words from April 2021 in which he said Biden’s age was an advantage.

Apparently, Maher has seen enough of a decline in Joe Biden in the past two years to think it’s time for a change. The “New Rule” segment finished up with Maher supporting a younger Democrat running for office.

Doing so would give the Democratic Party a practically guaranteed victory over Trump and make the GOP look like the party clinging to the past. Maher sounded genuinely appreciative of what Biden accomplished in the White House — he just doesn’t want to see any more of it.
