2 Saturday Night Live hosts pick up 2023 Emmy nominations
By Matt Moore
The 2023 Emmy Award nominations were released, and two Saturday Night Live hosts were honored for their work in season 48.
Quinta Brunson was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. The Abbott Elementary creator and star hosted SNL on April 1.
Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal picked up a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Fans saw the Last of Us and Mandalorian star make his Saturday Night Live debut on February 4, 2023.
Both Brunson and Pascal have a decent chance of taking home the Primetime Emmy based just on history. Seven of the past 13 winners in the actor category have been SNL hosts. On the actress side, six winners have come from SNL during the same span.
Pascal’s competition in 2023 includes Jon Bernthal (The Bear), Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Oliver Platt (The Bear), and Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso).
Brunson will go up against Becky Ann Baker (Ted Lasso), Taraji P. Henson (Abbott Elementary), Judith Light (Poker Face), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), and Harriet Walter (Ted Lasso).
What Saturday Night Live hosts didn’t get nominated?
Pedro Pascal and Quinta Brunson weren’t the only Saturday Night Live hosts with a chance to secure Emmy nominations. All told, SNL submitted 16 names for consideration.
For the actor category, Miles Teller, Brendan Gleeson, Dave Chappelle, the duo of Steve Martin and Martin Short, Austin Butler, Michael B. Jordan, Pedro Pascal, and Travis Kelce were submitted. If you’re keeping track at home, that means Woody Harrelson and Jack Harlow didn’t make the list.
On the actress side, Megan Thee Stallion, Amy Schumer, Keke Palmer, Aubrey Plaza, Jenna Ortega, Quinta Brunson, and Molly Shannon were submitted. Ana de Armas was the only female host who did not get the chance for a nomination.
The 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled for September 18.
