Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, June 24?
By Matt Moore
It’s Saturday night, and late-night TV fans are hoping for some live comedy from New York City. So what should Saturday Night Live audiences expect to see tonight on NBC?
It certainly has been another busy week, creating the kind of headlines SNL usually jumps on for cold opens, “Weekend Update” segments, or sketches. SNL’s response to the news has been part of why the show is nearing 50 years on the air.
Sadly, we won’t get to hear or see what SNL has up its sleeve on Saturday. There will not be a new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight.
Instead, NBC will reair the October 15, 2022 episode. Interested viewers can tune in to see Megan Thee Stallion pull double duty as both host and musical guest.
There will not be a vintage Saturday Night Live episode at 10:00 p.m. ET. During that time, NBC will be carrying USFL coverage.
Why isn’t Saturday Night Live new tonight?
Frequent Saturday Night Live viewers probably aren’t shocked to hear that Saturday Night Live won’t be new tonight. It all comes down to the schedule.
SNL typically ends its season in the middle of May. Only once in the show’s history has an episode extended this late into the summer. So fans know not to expect any new content once the summer hits.
However, things did end in an unusual fashion this year. The Writers Guild of America went on strike at the start of May, effectively ending SNL season 48. With no writers, the final three episodes of the season were shelved.
SNL had its de facto season finale back on April 15. Pete Davidson, Kieran Culkin, and Jennifer Coolidge were tapped to host the final three episodes of the season. Maybe they’ll get another shot when season 49 comes in the fall.
