Saturday Night Live fans typically expect the show to open with something special when there’s been a week like we’ve had. So what should SNL audiences expect to see tonight on NBC?

Earlier this week, former President Donald Trump was indicted in Miami. The spectacle and subsequent rally are the types of events that provide a Saturday Night Live cold open with some quality material.

Unfortunately, we won’t get to see SNL’s version of Trump’s latest legal troubles. There will not be a new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight.

Instead, NBC will reair the October 8, 2022 episode. Fans can tune in to see host Brendan Gleeson once again. He’s joined by musical guest Willow.

There will not be a vintage SNL episode at 10:00 p.m. ET. NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Open golf championship is expected to run during that timeslot.

Why isn’t there a new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight?

One reason we won’t get a new Saturday Night Live episode tonight is the ongoing writers’ strike. The Writers Guild of America still hasn’t received a suitable offer, keeping many shows and movies throughout Hollywood on hiatus.

SNL joined other late-night TV shows, such as The Tonight ShowLate Night with Seth Meyers, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, by going dark once the writers began picketing.

Another reason there won’t be a new SNL tonight is the calendar. Even if the writers were back to work, SNL’s season would have ended by now. The show typically wraps up by the middle of May. Only season 1 extended this late into the summer.

Saturday Night Live season 49 should return in late September or early October 2023. That is, if the writers’ strike reaches a resolution by then. Stay tuned.
