Friday gave us some unprecedented headlines — the type of headlines that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has only dreamed of reading. So what should late-night TV fans expect to see tonight on CBS?

Former President Donald Trump was indicted this week, and Friday brought more details about the extent he went to in storing government documents at Mar-a-Lago. Stephen Colbert is among the late-night TV hosts who have been praying for the day Trump faces some sort of consequences. So it’s safe to assume Colbert has a lot to say tonight.

Unfortunately, fans won’t get to hear from Colbert on Friday. There will not be a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight.

Instead, CBS will reair the September 27, 2022 episode. Interested viewers can tune in to see Samuel L. Jackson and Clarissa Ward join the show.

Why isn’t The Late Show with Stephen Colbert new tonight?

There are two main reasons why The Late Show with Stephen Colbert isn’t new tonight. For starters, it is Friday. Stephen Colbert and company typically don’t have a new show lined up for the end of the week.

But the big reason why fans won’t see Colbert on CBS tonight is the Writers Guild of America strike. Writers across the entertainment industry remain on strike as they negotiate for better wages. So with no writers, late-night TV shows are among those programs that have been dark since the start of May.

Colbert also hasn’t weighed in on today’s news via Twitter, either. Perhaps the late-night host is trying to stay unplugged during the unexpected hiatus. Or, it could be another act of solidarity with writers by refusing to “give away” any comedy.

Regardless, The Late Show remains off the air. Don’t expect that to change until the WGA hears a deal worth signing.
