Last year, The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert reflected on his past coverage of former President Bush.

The Late Show host called Bush “a man who I spent many happy years pretending to like”. Colbert’s famed character on The Colbert Report often saw the comedian cosy up to the very worst of America’s pool of politicians.

Back in 2006, Stephen Colbert graced the White House Correspondent’s Dinner Stage, mocking Bush in the most brilliant fashion. Posing as your traditional Conservative, Colbert took a variety of disguised digs at Bush, all in the name of the exaggerated compliment.

Colbert was celebrated at the time for his heroic comedic assassination of the leader.

Starting off with a graceful honouring of the limited government principles in Iraq was enough to keep Bush trapped in an unsteady heart rate.

Colbert settled into his role as the night’s guest comedian so well that he’d even held himself up as a possible candidate to replace Tony Snow as press secretary. His reason? “Nothing but contempt” for the audience of senior journalists.

Years later, Colbert has been praised for his satirical genius that night. His thirty-minute address is often cited as one of the main reasons CBS saw him as the network’s next late-night star upon David Letterman’s departure.

Colbert laughs at Bush’s Freudian slip

Back in 2021 when George Bush made a huge blunder during an address, Colbert was the first to make comment.

Whilst making an appearance at his Presidential Centre in Texas, Bush accidentally confused Ukraine with Iraq. Worst of all, the entire blunder was all on tape.

“The one phrase he should definitely never utter for the rest of his life,” Colbert joked last year.

“It’s like he’s thinking of it all the time and it just popped out.”

Accidentally confusing Putin’s hideous war with Ukraine with your own incredibly controversial action in Iraq as a former President is sure a sight to behold. Even the audience present in the room with Bush couldn’t help but chuckle. Not quite as loud as Colbert’s audience though, who appeared over the moon at seeing the late-night host take one more jab at the Republican.
