Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, April 1?
By Matt Moore
Saturday Night Live fans have been patient during the show’s recent hiatus. But given the news this week, many are begging for SNL to return tonight. So what should we expect to see on NBC?
SNL last aired a brand-new episode on March 11. Jenna Ortega helped the show go out on a high note. Now, former President Donald Trump’s indictment has SNL audiences eager to see if the show will return in time to cover the story.
Luckily, the stars aligned for SNL. There will be a brand new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight.
Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson makes her SNL debut as host. She’ll be joined by musical guest Lil Yachty.
What to expect on Saturday Night Live tonight
Obviously, the biggest story of the week was Thursday night’s bombshell that a grand jury indicted Donald Trump. He’s expected to face charges stemming from hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
The news broke late on Thursday, meaning that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert reacted live during its taping. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel Live! had a few hours’ head start and could tackle the story that night.
Now it’s Saturday Night Live‘s turn. The show may have had a cold open planned, but it’s a safe bet to assume it got tossed out the window. There’s no doubt tonight’s show will open with some take on Trump’s indictment.
The obvious choice is to have James Austin Johnson come out as Trump and deliver a classic rambling defense. Maybe we’ll see SNL’s vision of Trump getting arrested or spending time in jail? Or, SNL could go the Fox News route and allow a handful of cast members to show off impressions as Trump defenders.
It’s highly unlikely (and probably not recommended by legal experts) to have Stormy Daniels cameo. Fans may recall that she appeared in a cold open back in 2018.
Saturday Night Live airs tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
