On the surface, John Oliver and Ron DeSantis seem like opposites in multiple ways. But there is one thing the Last Week Tonight host and Florida governor appear to agree on.

Oliver made DeSantis the focal point of a recent Last Week Tonight episode, breaking down the republican’s policies as well as giving insight into DeSantis’ personal life. The late-night TV host didn’t hold back his punchlines or political pushback.

Team DeSantis responded to the episode by calling John Oliver “irrelevant.” And that is where the Last Week Tonight host finds common ground with the expected presidential candidate.

Appear on Late Night with Seth Meyers, John Oliver responded to Ron DeSantis. Oliver told Seth Meyers “It’s a fair hit. It might be the first thing he’s said that I’ve agreed with, to be honest.”

Jokes aside, John Oliver made it clear that his show gave Ron DeSantis every opportunity to respond before the episode went live on HBO. Instead, the Florida governor and his team declined to entertain the “pages of questions” Oliver and Last Week Tonight prepared.

The comedian went on to turn the tables on DeSantis. As he told Meyers, “his response was literally irrelevant to us because he didn’t f***ing provide one.”

Ron DeSantis continues to be relevant to John Oliver and the rest of late-night TV

The “irrelevant” jab at John Oliver falls flat from Ron DeSantis when you look at the comedian’s resume. Last Week Tonight has won 26 Primetime Emmy Awards over the past nine seasons, making it one of the greatest late-night TV shows ever. Then there’s the fact the piece on DeSantis already has close to five million views in a little over a week.

All that is to say DeSantis needs to get used to late-night comedians mentioning him. Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and others have already poked at the controversial politician. If he makes his bid for the White House official, DeSantis will become that much more relevant as a late-night target.
