VIRAL: John Oliver DESTROYS Ron DeSantis on Last Week Tonight
By Sam Linden
On a recent episode of his popular show Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing him of being a hypocrite and a fascist. Oliver accused DeSantis of claiming to be a champion of free speech and anti-cancel culture while simultaneously suppressing dissenting voices and spreading false information.
Ed Krassenstein took to Twitter to highlight these points and pleaded for people to “share this clip to all you Republican friends.”
DeSantis has been in the national spotlight recently for his controversial policies, which have drawn both praise and criticism. Many on the right have praised him for his aggressive stance against so-called cancel culture and his efforts to protect free speech, while others have accused him of using his power to suppress dissent and undermine democratic institutions.
Oliver argued that DeSantis’s supposed support for free speech and anti-cancel culture was merely a cover for his true agenda, which he characterized as fascist. According to Oliver, DeSantis has made numerous false claims in order to pass laws that give him and his party more power and take freedom away from Floridians.
One of the main examples cited by Oliver was DeSantis’s efforts to suppress critical race theory (CRT) in Florida schools. DeSantis has claimed that CRT is divisive and promotes racism, and has passed laws banning it from being taught in schools. However, Oliver argued that DeSantis’s true motivation was not to combat racism, but rather to stifle dissent and maintain the status quo.
Oliver also criticized DeSantis for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing him of downplaying the severity of the crisis and spreading misinformation. According to Oliver, DeSantis has made false claims about the efficacy of vaccines and has refused to implement measures to curb the spread of the virus, such as mask mandates and lockdowns.
Oliver concluded his segment by warning viewers not to be fooled by DeSantis’s rhetoric. He argued that DeSantis’s brand of authoritarianism was just as dangerous as that of former President Trump, and that Floridians and Americans as a whole should be wary of his actions.
The controversy surrounding DeSantis is likely to continue as he continues to pursue his agenda in Florida and beyond. Whether he is a true defender of free speech and anti-cancel culture, or a fascist masquerading as a populist, remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: John Oliver and other critics will continue to hold him accountable for his actions and his words.
