Stephen Colbert is shifting gears from late-night TV to fantasy. The Late Show host will executive produce a series based on the book series The Chronicles of Amber.

Colbert will serve as executive producer for a potential series based on the fantasy novels by Roger Zelazny. The comedian’s production company, Spartina, will partner with Skybound Entertainment and Vincent Newman Entertainment.

According to reports, the team is still searching for a writer. Additionally, no network or streaming service has agreed to take on the project. Colbert and Spartina do have a first-look deal with CBS. That would suggest Paramount+ would get to make the first call on putting Chronicles of Amber into production.

Zelazny published the first book in the series in 1972. It centers on a royal family able to travel through different dimensions of reality. All told, there are 10 books in the main series with over 15 million copies sold.

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has cited Chronicles of Amber as an influence over his novels. Colbert referenced the Thrones scribe in his statement:

"George R.R. Martin and I have similar dreams. I’ve carried the story of Corwin in my head for over 40 years, and I’m thrilled to partner with Skybound and Vincent Newman to bring these worlds to life. All roads lead to Amber, and I’m happy to be walking them."

Stephen Colbert’s love of fantasy is well-known

Stephen Colbert’s love of fantasy fiction is well-known among fans of The Late Show. It’s hard to think of another late-night host whose hobby is so widely known.

That’s partly because Colbert doesn’t let his viewers forget it. Dating back to The Colbert Report, the comedian has declared his love for The Lord of the Rings. Colbert continued to share his passion through several interviews and a trip to New Zealand.

Now, Colbert will get to control his own fantasy world if his TV series goes live. He’ll be working within the world Zelazny created — but producing it the way he sees fit.
