Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, January 7?
By Matt Moore
The calendar has officially flipped over to 2023, bringing in the new year. Does that mean it’s time for the first new Saturday Night Live of the year?
SNL signed off following its holiday episode back on December 17. Host Austin Butler did an admirable job, but the real story was Cecily Strong’s departure. In 2023, Saturday Night Live will have to figure out how it moves on without one of its best performers.
Unfortunately, we won’t get to see how that plays out Saturday. There will not be a new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight. The sketch show remains on its holiday hiatus.
Instead, NBC will reair the October 15, 2022 episode during the show’s normal timeslot. Interested fans can revisit Megan The Stallion pulling double duty as both the host and musical guest.
For the earlier crowd, NBC will also replay an episode at 10:00 p.m. ET. It will be the season 47, episode 16 show hosted by Jerrod Carmichael with musical guest Gunna. Carmichael is set to host the Golden Globe Awards on January 10 broadcast on NBC.
When will Saturday Night Live return?
Saturday Night Live taking the week off shouldn’t come as a shock to most fans. The show traditionally takes an extended break around the holidays.
The good news is that we know when SNL will be back. Aubrey Plaza will host on January 21 along with musical guest Sam Smith. Michael B. Jordan makes his SNL debut the following week, joined by musical guest Lil Baby.
Fans are undoubtedly eager to see SNL back on the air considering everything that’s going on. The Speaker of the House debacle is the kind of material SNL usually sinks its teeth into. But it looks like the moment has passed for SNL to give us their version of the voting process.
However, there’s never a dull week in the news. So when Saturday Night Live does return on January 21, there should be a brand new story to inspire the cold open.
