After Deadline made a number of late-night predictions for the year 2023, Twitter is reacting to the possibility of CNN launching a late-night show to rival Fox News’ highly popular Gutfeld!

CNN’s latest project, an on-demand streaming service failed miserably after just a few months in motion. Clearly, the channel’s decision to enter the streaming arena came far too early. Despite this, the channel could find its way to rival cable news frontrunners, Fox News with a late-night show.

After concerns over liberal bias in today’s late-night lineup, Fox News launched its very own late-night show, with long-time anchor, Greg Gutfeld at the helm. Towards the end of 2022, the programme saw higher ratings than CBS’ Stephen Colbert, allowing Gutfeld to officially crown himself ‘the late night king’.

Purely on an entertainment front, the possibility of Gutfeld battling a CNN host in a newly founded late-night space every night could be entertaining.

After all, CNN’s new boss has some late-night experience, previously producing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a number of years.

One user on Twitter, in reaction to the rumours, suggested a CNN rival show “screams desperation” and would “definitely fail”.

Does CNN really need a late-night show?

In theory, there’s nothing CNN can do on a late-night front that the traditional networks aren’t doing already. To really have any shot at pulling in a comfortable number of viewers, the channel would have to openly admit to a particular political bias.

We also can’t see how CNN would ever manage to hire a host popular enough to rival the likes of Colbert or Fallon. Fox’s Gutfeld always had a comedic edge to him, making the anchor perfect for the role. CNN has no one of the sorts and for obvious reasons. The channel has never sought to find entertainment in the news cycle, instead opting for a more sombre style of reporting.
