Is The Late Show with Stephen Colbert new tonight, January 6?
By Matt Moore
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had late-night TV’s best coverage of the January 6 insurrection two years ago. So what should fans expect to see on the anniversary?
Stephen Colbert has long been a (comedic) voice of reason for fans. The Late Show helped millions of viewers try to make sense of some of the Trump years’ most unprecedented events. That included the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol.
Unfortunately, we won’t get to hear Colbert reflect on the second anniversary on Friday. There will not be a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight.
Instead, CBS will reair the December 14, 2022 episode. Interested fans can rewatch visits from Emily Blunt, José Andrés, Carlota, Inés & Lucía Andrés, and Jeff Goldblum.
It’s not too big of a surprise to see Colbert off tonight. He typically doesn’t air new episodes on Friday nights.
Revisit The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s coverage after the January 6 insurrection
Stephen Colbert completely changed his show following the insurrection. The late-night host abandoned his scripted show and instead went live that night in 2021.
In his raw monologue, Colbert went after the Republicans who supported President Donald Trump. Challenging the GOP, the comedian asked if they finally “made America great again.”
The monologue ended up being The Late Show‘s most-watched YouTube clip of 2021. Today, it has over 12 million views.
Stephen Colbert is scheduled to return with a brand new episode of The Late Show on Monday, January 9. We’ll have to see if the comedian decides to still revisit the riot’s anniversary or chooses to look toward the future. Luckily, Kevin McCarthy and the GOP continue to provide Colbert with new material from the Capitol.
