John Oliver has taken aim at the recently appointed Twitter boss, Elon Musk. After a number of weeks at the Twitter HQ, Musk has gathered his fair share of critics after announcing a stricter working environment for the company’s workforce.

The businessman also faced online backlash after allowing a number of banned accounts back on the platform, including former President Trump and Andrew Tate. Musk has made it clear he’s on a mission to ensure freedom of speech for all users when using Twitter.

Oliver recalled a statistic to his viewers on Sunday night, explaining that racial slurs spiked nearly 500% since the takeover. Whilst Musk, of course, can’t be blamed for all the activity on the site, Oliver made reference to the presumption that the businessman’s free speech ethos has caused this.

“You’ll log in and see 30,000 people tweeting about ‘The Jews’ on a Tuesday afternoon and you do not want to click to find out why,” Oliver said.

The Last Week Tonight host then turned to Musk’s controversial decision to charge for blue check marks, weighing in on what he described as a bad call.

Oliver cited a number of cases where impersonators had stolen the identities of large corporations such as Coca-Cola and American Girl.

Despite his criticism, the HBO host did admit that he occasionally finds the humour in Musk’s recent Twitter activity.

“Whilst some argue that there is a method to this madness, others aren’t so sure,” the host explained.

John Oliver: Elon Musk is “crowdsourcing advice”

“It sure seems that Elon Musk doesn’t have a plan. He even seems to be crowdsourcing advice with desperate tweets like: ‘What should Twitter do next?'”.

In recent hours, Musk wrote a direct response to the hysteria surrounding Twitter, tweeting: “Wasn’t Twitter supposed to die by now or something … ?”.

Despite the embarrassing controversies surrounding Musk’s takeover of the platform, millions continue to support him in his endeavours. Just take a look at the positive engagement on his latest tweets.

Even when accused of now promoting far-right attitudes on the social media platform by left-wing outlets, it seems Musk does have a line on returning users to the platform.

Last week, the Twitter boss made it clear that he would not allow conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones to make a return. Musk mentioned Jones’ recent Sandy Hook trial as the main reason he won’t make any budges.
